Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a massive sculpture featuring the colossal heads of four U.S. Presidents carved into granite rock in South Dakota. Each face stands 60 feet tall! It was built to represent the foundation, expansion, development, and preservation of the United States.
Have you ever looked at a huge mountain and thought, 'This would look way cooler with some giant faces carved into it'?
Well, someone in South Dakota actually thought that! It’s called Mount Rushmore National Memorial, and it features the colossal heads of four amazing U.S. Presidents carved right out of the granite rock. The idea for this massive sculpture started back in 1923 by a local historian named Doane Robinson, who wanted to bring more tourists to South Dakota! The sculptor chosen, Gutzon Borglum, took this idea and turned it into a tribute to American history. It took 14 years of hard work to finish this incredible piece of art!
Mira says:
"Wow, carving an entire mountain! That must have been like building with the world's biggest LEGOs, except instead of LEGOs, they used dynamite! I can't wait to learn how they made those faces so smooth!"
What Presidents Are on Mount Rushmore and Why Were They Picked?
The mountain features four presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. They weren't chosen randomly—each one represents a super important part of the United States story. The sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, wanted them to represent the foundation, expansion, development, and preservation of the nation!
Mind-Blowing Fact!
The original idea was actually to carve heroes of the American West, but the sculptor convinced everyone that presidents would get more national attention!
How Big Are Those Presidents' Faces, Anyway?
These faces are gigantic! You need to know some big numbers to understand the scale of this project for kids learning about American history. Each president's face stands about 60 feet tall! That's about the height of a six-story building!

How Did They Carve a Mountain?
You can’t use a regular hammer and chisel for a job this big! The carving process was super dangerous and exciting. Gutzon Borglum and his team of about 400 workers (many of them were miners!) began drilling into the mountain in 1927. Amazingly, throughout the 14 years it took, not a single person died during construction!
Step 1: Blasting Away the Rock
To get the basic shape, the workers used dynamite! They drilled holes into the granite, placed the explosives, and BOOM! About 450,000 tons of rock were removed this way. This was the quickest way to get the big parts out of the way.
Step 2: The Fine Details
After the dynamite did the heavy lifting, the workers used drills and chisels to carve the finer details, like the eyes, noses, and mouths. They hung from steel cables on the side of the 500-foot mountain, working carefully to make the surface smooth.
💡 Did You Know?
Originally, the plan was to carve the presidents all the way down to their waists, but they ran out of money and time, so only the heads were finished! You can still see the faint outline of an arm and chest on George Washington's sculpture if you look closely.
🎯 Quick Quiz!
Which president was chosen to represent the 'preservation' of the United States because he kept the country together during the Civil War?
Who Was In Charge of the Whole Gig?
The master planner was the sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, who oversaw the project from the start in 1927 until his death in March 1941. His son, Lincoln Borglum, took over to finish the last parts of the project after his father passed away. They also made sure the mountain faced southeast so the sculptors got the most sunlight possible each day!
- George Washington: Represents the Birth of the nation (First President).
- Thomas Jefferson: Represents Growth (He bought the Louisiana Territory, doubling the size of the U.S.).
- Theodore Roosevelt: Represents Development (He pushed for big projects that helped America grow strong).
- Abraham Lincoln: Represents Preservation (He kept the country together during the Civil War).
Mount Rushmore is made of tough granite, a type of rock that doesn't wear away easily. It erodes only about 1 inch every 10,000 years, so these presidents will be watching over South Dakota for a very, very long time!
