Mira says:

"Wow, six wives! That sounds like a lot of drama for one king. I bet the royal matchmakers had a tough job back then! It's amazing how one person's decisions can change history for everyone."

What Was It Like to Be Young King Henry VIII?

When Henry VIII was born on June 28, 1491, he wasn't even supposed to be king!. His older brother, Arthur, was the heir. But sadly, Prince Arthur passed away when he was only 15 years old.. This meant that when his father, Henry VII, died in 1509, the 17-year-old Henry suddenly became the King of England!.

The young Henry was super athletic and talented. He was taught by the best tutors and could speak Latin, French, and Spanish fluently.. He loved hunting, dancing, and even wrote his own music—some of his songs are still around today!. He was even awarded the title 'Defender of the Faith' by the Pope for writing a book defending the Catholic Church!.

Mind-Blowing Fact!

King Henry VIII loved his dogs so much that he once gave the Holy Roman Emperor a gift of 400 trained dogs! He even gave his own pets silk coats and velvet collars for winter.

The Big Problem: Why Did Henry Need a New Wife?

Henry married his brother's widow, Catherine of Aragon, right before he was crowned.. They were married for nearly 20 years, but they only had one daughter who survived: Princess Mary.. Henry desperately needed a male heir—a son—to become the next king and keep the powerful Tudor family in charge..

He started to believe his marriage was cursed because he married his brother's wife, something the Bible warned against.. So, Henry asked the Pope, the head of the Catholic Church, for an annulment (which is like saying the marriage never actually happened). But the Pope said NO!.

6 Queens he married
(In his lifetime!)
1509 Year he became King
(Age 17)
3 Surviving legitimate children
(All became monarchs)
38 Years he reigned
(Until 1547)

How Did Henry Break Away from the Pope?

When the Pope refused to grant the annulment, Henry decided he would take charge of religion in England himself! This was the start of the English Reformation.

He got Parliament (the English law-making group) to pass laws that officially declared Henry the Supreme Head of the Church of England, not the Pope!.

The Big Change: The Church of England

This was a HUGE deal! By making himself the boss, Henry could now get the annulment he wanted, which meant he could marry his new love, Anne Boleyn..

He also closed down many wealthy Catholic monasteries (where monks lived) and took all their treasures and land for himself. This made Henry incredibly rich!.

💡 Did You Know?

Even though Henry started the Church of England to get a divorce, he himself was still very religious and mostly kept Catholic-style beliefs. It was his son, Edward VI, who made the Church much more Protestant later on!

🎯 Quick Quiz!

What was the main reason King Henry VIII wanted to divorce his first wife, Catherine of Aragon?

A) She secretly wanted to be queen of France.
B) She wouldn't let him listen to his favorite music.
C) She did not give him a surviving male heir (son).
D) She spent too much money on fancy hats.

The Six Wives: Divorced, Beheaded, Died!

The easiest way to remember what happened to Henry's six wives is a famous rhyme for kids: 'Divorced, beheaded, died; Divorced, beheaded, survived.'.

He married Catherine of Aragon (Divorced), Anne Boleyn (Beheaded), Jane Seymour (Died), Anne of Cleves (Divorced), Catherine Howard (Beheaded), and finally Catherine Parr (Survived him)..

  • Wife 3: Jane Seymour was the only one to give Henry the son he always wanted, Prince Edward. Sadly, Jane died just two weeks after Edward was born..
  • Wife 2: Anne Boleyn was executed on Henry's orders after she also failed to give him a son, and he accused her of cheating..
  • Wife 5: Catherine Howard was executed for treason after Henry found out about her life before their marriage..

As Henry got older, he became very unhealthy, putting on a lot of weight, and he grew quite mean-tempered.. He died on January 28, 1547, at the age of 55, and was buried next to Jane Seymour, his third wife and the mother of his only son..
